There are a range of activities, sights and experiences to discover within Shongweni Valley, just a few minutes walk or drive from the Lodge, as well as in the adjacent Valley of a Thousand Hills, named after the thousands of hills that tumble down to the mighty Umgeni River, which flows from the distant Drakensberg Mountains like our very own Sterkspruit River.
Things to do in and around Shongweni Valley
Just a few minutes drive from the Lodge, through the sugarcane fields off JB Macintosh Drive, lie the magnificent Wekeweke Falls, which cascade down a canyon next to the railway line and flow down into the Shongweni Dam.
Shongweni Farmer’s Market
The Shongweni Farmer’s & Craft Market is just 5 minutes up the road and open every Saturday 7am to 1pm and also on the last Sunday of every month 8am to 1pm. The market has a unique atmosphere, with a range of foods, family fun and entertainment.
Umgeni Steam Railway
The Umgeni Steam Railway is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation of railway heritage in South Africa. The steam train departs Inchanga Station (30 minutes drive from the Lodge), and rolls through the Valley of a Thousand Hills to Botha’s Hill.
Hillcrest is the nearest town to The Treehouse River Lodge. Here guests will find several shopping malls, major department stores, coffee shops, and more. It’s just a 25 minute drive from the Lodge for those looking for urban retail and dining.
PheZulu Safari Park
Pheulu Safari Park is 25 minutes from the Lodge, up Old Main Road, featuring views of the Valley of a Thousand Hills, as well as guided game drives through the Phezulu Conservation Area, Segway tours, and a crocodile and snake park.
Go Fresh Cafe
Go Fresh Cafe within the Mushroom Farm on Kassier Road, 15 minutes’ drive from the Lodge is the best in town for breakfast (apart from us of course). It has a wide-ranging menu and there’s also a range of specialty stores from antiques to clothing.
Set within 21 hectares of forest, grassland and wetland in the Springside Nature Reserve, the Hillcrest Convervancy is just 25 minutes from the Lodge and offers a range of walking and hiking trails, as well as guided bird watching.
Groovy Balls, 25 minutes from the Lodge, is the only adventure Park within Kwa Zulu Natal that offers Zorbing, off Road Go Karting, paintball and other various team building activities. It’s located in Hillcrest on Old Main Road.
Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park, 25 minutes from the Lodge, offers single-track bike trails and hiking routes in a dramatic canyon landscape, plus swimming at waterfall. There are a range of bikes for hire for all tastes.
A further afield, 45 minutes from the Lodge, is the Inanda Dam. The dam provides a range of water sport activities on the 1, 469 hectares of water surface ranging from boating, canoeing, and jet skiing, to yachting and fishing.
Tala Game Reserve
Tala Game Reserve, an hour from the Lodge, is a wildlife sanctuary spanning over 3000 hectares with many diverse natural environments, the reserve features over 380 bird species, with big game that includes kudu, hippo, giraffe and eland.
Karkloof Canopy Tour
An hour and a half drive from the Lodge, but well-worth the trip, the the Karkloof Canopy Tour is in a spectacular valley of the Karkloof Forest Reserve. The platforms are built high up in the forest canopy and feature a magnificent waterfall.
The Treehouse River Lodge is a family-run guesthouse with four chalets in Shongweni Valley on the Sterkspruit River.
